Towards Efficient UAV-Assisted Network Slicing: Exploiting Slice-Dedicated, Customized UAV Fleets in RAN
Abstract
With the rise of network slicing, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be a pivotal addition. Similar to UAV-assisted networks, drones can be integrated into slicing-capable networks to enable network slicing. With the increasing number of different network user types, UAVs can introduce the necessary flexibility and fast response and deployment in networks. As a result, this paper explores the potential in integrating UAVs to assist in network slicing by introducing dedicated and customized UAVs for each slice. This work addresses network slice improvement in 5G Radio Access Network (RAN), by exploiting specialized UAVs to serve slice users. We propose a multi-UAV solution with distinct types to address the special requirements of each slice. Extensive tests are performed to evaluate the proposed UAV types. The results proved that specific UAV types yield better performance and require fewer UAVs. Finally, some open issues and future trends are highlighted before concluding.
